First of all look at http://www.w3.org/ and try learning a bit about HTMLx and CSSx . I set up my pages using bluefish http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/index.html (I use linux but it is available for Windows too) you can preview your pages in your browser and without buying a domain/hosting solution. Another editor to consider is Kompozer or even good old notepad (which has no checking of course). Some people will suggest Wordpress etc but play around at your hearts content before committing before looking to buy anything, and first think what you want to create e.g. Selling , Information only, Blog etc you have to be specific as to what you want then tell folks here what you want to create, " create my own website " is too generic

Personally if you are dead set on using UK registrars and hosting I would suggest acornhost, and though I have not used them that is only because I refuse to have anything to do with 123-reg or 1and1; I was building a very simple informational site for my friends business and it took HOURS to try to figure out why it was not updating anything on their proprietary control panel while explaining what I was doing so she could take over (it didn't update because the unicorns were on holiday), in the end I scrubbed everything and just did it manually with Wordpress (in 2 minutes)

If you are not bothered with using UK registrars and hosting, I would recommend Namecheap for your domain and hostgator for hosting, though this is only really viable if you have dollars in a paypal account. You will pay extra for transfer fees. Namecheap are awesome, it looks stripped down but it has the advantage of everything being within 2-3 clicks, rather than the nightmare mess that is Godaddy. Besides that, they have always been super quick when answering any queries.

Prices for .co.uk are $6.58/yr without coupons which you can usually find around domaining sites such as namepros.com which works out at about £4.50 a year :)

I agree with using Kompozer, it is a bit of an uphill struggle to learn but it is very good and best of all it is free :)

*Coupon codes for namecheap, I am no longer all that active on that forum so there is little point PMing me there, but they are awesome and will assist you all they can :)

    from the original post!
i think there's a lot of people on this forum who got bad exam results.. ie answered the question they wanted asked - rather than the question that is asked.

Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about on-line website builders, but i have seen weebly mentioned quite a lot in a favourable manner on these forums.
Watch out for sneeky hidden costs.

I also have no faith in 1and1, a ropey outfit at best.

    Maybe one of these?

cheers chunter. I agree with you about people answering a totally different question than the one asked. seems to happen a lot on here, but fortunately there are several people who have some knowledge that is worth mining. When they answer the rewards are great. I politely thank the 'others' and move on.
the best thing i did was join this website, and I am sure I have made as many mistakes as everyone else in my postings.
will have a look at weebly this weekend.

I know my answer was not perfect and it was stated that the OP is a novice, but many of these big companies that advertise "easy" websites are full of it, if we take Wix as an example, you can get a free one but it looks crap and doesn't instill any confidence in anyone because I find that the "created by wix" plastered all over the place gets in the way.

If you pay for an upgrade to your own domain you still have their nasty banners all over the place and you are paying a fortune for the privilege of advertising their brand.

It is much better to get a program such as kompozer and just work with it; it may take a few months but in time if anything goes wrong you will much much better positioned to be able to deal with that rather than relying on some faceless company website builder.

Hell, I know people who GIVE away such templates for free so you can load them up and then play around with the settings so you can figure out what does what.

When building a site or anything that you will have to maintain on a daily basis I have always believed in doing it yourself even if it looks rubbish at first, because your skills will improve :)

Anyways, I admit I didn't answer the question to the OPs criteria, but that is my view anyway :)

If it is wanted I came across this site a few years ago and it is great for getting your first site set up and it is fairly idiot proof; not that you will not have to reread a couple of sections here and there lol
