Funny....after an email to the CEO last night and a complaint on Santander's Facebook page, they suddenly received a phone call from a manager this morning and the mortgage was approved by 1pm. It just shows what happens when you don't sit back and let them walk all over you!

They will still proceed with their complaint though, as what shocking service they received.

This is so true! In 1991 just after getting married me and my husband got jobs in Wiltshire and moved there from the north. We rented for a while then started looking for a house. Applied for a mortgage by walking into a building society and meeting with the manager.

Several weeks went by and I decided to chase up in person, so I went into the building society. The manager came out and told me in front of an audience of staff and customers 'I've turned down your mortgage because I don't think you're responsible enough'!!! We had good jobs, weren't in debt and were asking to borrow less than our combined salaries would allow; I was embarrassed beyond belief. I went back to work and rang the Building Society CEO's pa and told her exactly what had happened. The next morning (which was a Saturday) the mortgage offer was delivered to us by hand!

I know it was over 20 years ago, but still shows what you can achieve by standing up for yourself. (Not sure that I'd still have the nerve to do that today - I think I was a much braver person when I was younger).
