Paying to cancel a mobile phone contract O2

Recently, I took out a contract for an iPhone 5 on 02 from the carphone warehouse. When I bought the phone, there was an understanding that there was good connection where I live. Since, the connection has become worse and worse to the point where I can barely make or receive calls. After downloading the 02 booster app, nothing has changed.
I was on Vodafone before I changed and now want to return to them. However, 02 want to charge me the rest of my contract in order for me to cancel. How can I be forced to pay for a contract which was signed with 02 when there was a mutual understanding that there was decent connection here, when in fact, there is not. They have failed to meet their part of the contract - not me. Why should I pay for their problem?
