No, but they do have to cover their labour costs, rent, insurance, tools, diagnostics equipment, taxes, environmental costs of disposal of oil and parts, rates, electricity, tea bags, provision of courtesy car, time taken checking the car when they could have been doing other profitable work....

I agree, knocking on the door of £300 is steep, but they have to make a living or else there will be no-where to get cars worked on.

Put it this way, if it was my car and it was at the garage and I needed it back quickly, I'd probably pay it. I wouldn't go back though.

Could be a blocked oil pick up pipe, common problem on some VAG engines.

Perhaps they're fitting a genuine dealer part which will no doubt be a lot more expensive than a ECP pattern switch.....an oil level sensor on my BMW was around a £100 from the dealers but I got one off Ebay for less than £30 and touch wood it's still working.

the blocked pickup pipe mentioned above sounds like a possibility

Has the car been serviced properly?

78000 on a 2004 is quite low mileage, some silly people think that low mileage means they don't have to get it serviced as often...... When actually the opposite is true.

    Thanks for the replies.

I picked my beetle up this afternoon, the bill worked out at £84 for parts and £160 for labour plus VAT. High price for labour i think but im glad to get it back and drove home ok so hopefully sorted the problem.

To answer the service question, it has had a full service every year since new some with VW others local garage.

I've bought plenty 'pattern parts' before, but mainly (99%)? have been oe equipment, in the same box, marked up the same as you would get from the dealer, as the manufacturer doesn't manufacture many parts, ie brakes/injection systems/sensors/wiring et al. My Toyota Celica didn't have a Toyota engine for example. Made by Yamaha. Go figure!

They advised to have oil pressure switch replaced and a full oil change/filter including a clean out of the engine as he seems to think there could be oil clogging causing the problem.
I love how absolutely everyone has missed this part - they've clearly removed the sump and cleaned the pickup.

    That's a long job!
