This is the recipe I got from my grandma, from an old recipe book.
115g SR flour
pinch of salt
14g marg
60g sugar
one beaten egg
milk to thin out the batter.
Mix the flour and salt in a bowl and rub in the marg.
Mix in the sugar then the beaten egg and milk.
It should be a smooth batter.
Then cook 2 or 3 at a time (what ever will fit in a frying pan) in a hot pan.
I have found that a table spoon is about right per pancake.
I have got a tefal pancake frying pan but my grandma just used to use her normal frying pan.
You need a little oil in the pan to help them fry.
I have found they can burn quick so I usually put in the three panckaes then they start to bubble and turn them over strait away otherwise they will burn.
But I am sure you will soon find out hows best for you to cook them.
I love to eat them with lemon and sugar, but when they have gone cold they are soooooo lovelly with butter on them.:TJeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -

Hi Penny, thanks for finding this thread and moving my post here.
Like the original poster Doonhamer, my Gran never weighed anything either, cup of this, cup of that etc.. I do remember her sending me to the supermarket for Cream of Tarter & Bicardonate of soda. Don't really know what they do though, raising agents?
I'm going to borrow my sister's George Forman grill when I make them - it's got a flat bit on it for doing eggs and stuff.
Quick question - How hot has the pan got to be, smoking hot?

Well I get it hot, so when the first pancake goes in it is sizzling, but I find they burn so quickly like this so I do turn the heat down to med after getting the pan hot.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090

Best to heat the pan or griddle until it is smoking!
Make sure that you grease it before starting though - I use a bit of butter on greaseproof paper (or the butter wrapper itself, depending on what type of butter you use). Use a palette knife to turn the pancakes over.
Yep, the Cream of Tartar and the Soda Bic are raising agents and will make your pancake rise nicely.
Best way to eat them is with butter and some homemade jam. Or even better, crowdie & cream!0
