Council Tax - Overpayment??

Moved out of my parents house properly for the first time last September (not including 3 years of Uni).Started paying council tax from October and just assumed the price I was paying was the monthly cost.

Back in April, when the financial year ended we got our new council tax bill for 2013/2014 - and realised the total yearly amount was the same (save for a slight inflation increase) as we had paid over the 6 months in the property!

Is this correct? Should I have paid a full 12 months council tax, despite only living in the property for 6 months of the financial year? Or have I been over-charged?

I have no problem if I'm wrong in thinking I've paid more than I should have - but it would be nice to know, incase I can claim some back!

You only pay the part of the year up to april

So essentially, I am entitled to 6 months-worth of payments back (or deducted from future bills)?

Council tax is worked out daily from the moment you become responsible for the property. So if your tenancy began in September, you should pay CT from Sept to April; then a new bill from April.
Check the old bill and see what period it has been charged for. Then go to the council with your tenancy agreement to show the date you moved in.
