Hi,
Is it possible to get legal software to rip dvds I already own so they can be stored on an external hard drive and stop taking up so much physical room? The actual dvds would be kept, not sold on or anything, just means I can put them in the loft and have the shelves for books instead. I realise there can be issues surrounding copyright protection, but I wouldn't be sharing the files or selling anything.
Thanks.

Imgburn is quite good if you looking for straight iso dumps0

doesn't strip copy protection though, resulting in jumbled video. but good for data dvd's!!

I don't know what iso or vlc means and I tried WinX but it just said it couldn't do it, even on dvds we've had for over ten years which don't have the more modern protections. I'm obviously out of my depth, might have to just get another bookshelf. I appreciate the replies!0

a quick google would tell you
vlc is a free media player program
iso is an image copy of a disc
iso's can be played using any player, media player etc, provided the iso is mounted first, using another piece of free software, vlc just removes this step, click on the iso, with vlc installed, and it will play
the freeware linked to will remove copy protection and copy the disc into one iso file onto your hard disk (which can be quite big, 4.7GB+)
vlc will play it!!

ISO = image of a disk you.
VLC = Free open source media playing software.
Try "MakeMKV" http://www.makemkv.com/download/
or
"Handbreak" http://handbrake.fr/
both can look a bit daunting! but simple to use once you get used to them.Laters

Can you actually play and view these DVD on your computer?
Which operating system are you utilising?
Will send you a PM with instructions if necessary.0
