Windows XP reinstall problem

Hello, I need some help and advice

I decided to reinstall XP the other day as my computer has been slowing down and I also managed to get a couple of pop up viruses which AVG couldn't do anything with.

I backed-up my important documents to the external hard drive and then proceeded with the instructions on my Recovery disk. When selecting the options, it asked me whether I wanted a complete reformat and reinstall or whether I just wanted to fix it. I chose reformat and reinstall. When this had finished, Windows started up, however it only got part way before saying a file had not been loaded correctly and to reinstall. So, I went through the process again, of the reformat and reinstall. This time it worked, however there are now two copies of XP on my computer and when it starts it asks which I want to run, one which works and one which doesn't.

So, any idea what to do now? I've not reinstalled everything, just in case I have reformat again. All I have right now on here is AVG and thats it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You could edit C:\boot.ini (a hidden file) and delete the non-working Windows folder, however I would start again. When you get to step 7 here, you should delete the C: partition (assuming that's where you installed Windows) and recreate it, leading to step 8 where you can format the partition (NTFS, not Quick) and install Windows on it.
