You probably need an amplifier to drive a loud speakers rather than a sound card. A sound card does not make sounds louder. You may have devices than can accept the line out signal from the laptop via a line in connection. Consider a personal stereo system, research appropriate audio inputs and outputs.

USB Soundcard for laptops - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/electronics/B0000T01LY/system-requirements/ref=ed_tec_dp_2_1/202-7384488-6819051
I believe Creative do a good one as well - the problem may not be with the laptop but with the quality of speakers that are being used. Decent PC speakers generally require an external power source, if your daughters are just the cheap standalone types then there no way they are ever going to produce quality sound. I hate to say this, but you could always pop into a local PC World and try some out in there to get a feel of whats available and what you can expect sound wise.0 -
That laptop has a decent sound card. Are you sure that nothing is wrong with your sound settings?0

My apologies as well.
If you write tiny url together - you get seven exclamation marks (.com stays). The reason, which I just found myself, is in my post above.0 -
It is a common occurence for a thread starter to set an initial title that does not reflect the solution to the problem. Hence all useful advice tends to get mis-classified under this title. Those USB device links are of great interest and are welcome addition to my understanding of USB technology. You still need an amplifier to hear anything with them !!!!!!!!
