im sure it works differently with different insurers, but is the idea that if you get one, and you are by definition a very bad driver:

will your premiums rise DURING the year? or will they just not go down should you choose to renew with the company? - or possibly go up on renewal

and do you still get your no claims?

if your prises dont rise during the year, and you still get your ncb

then why isnt everyone on blackbox insurance? - i know some impose a curfew, but i hear that more and more nowadays have scrapped the curfew

I spent a long time looking at different quotes (+ legal means of reducing them) for my 18yo lad, this included the various "black box" schemes.

I didn't find one that was cheaper than a normal policy, many were substantially more expensive.

While reading the blurb I often came across a statement similar to...."Good driving Could reduce your premium" not Will reduce it!

Since everything the driver does is monitored & relayed back I'm wondering why "good driving" isn't guarenteed to reduce the premiums..... after all that's the whole point isn't it?

I haven't looked at Blackbox Insurance because I feel my premium is low enough - £180 comp + protected for a Corsa and £230 comp + protected for a Mazda 5.

My questions are. What happens to the Blackbox if you do not renew. Is it yours? Do you have to pay to have it removed?

I can see the attraction for a young driver if there is a 40% reduction in a £4,000 premium.

And my biggest gripe are the van and 7.5t drivers in our company who get pulled up every single bleedin' day by the fleet manager for speeding - they are normally travelling at 50mph and the blackbox claims they are in a 30mph of streets that run parallel to the carriageway they are on. Sometimes they get threatened with disciplinaries and have to go back and take pictures of the site to prove they can't get from that carriageway to that street because of barriers or there is simply no exit!

no its not mine im just looking around, but im wondering to myself, why wouldnt i just go for blackbox insurance if it will reduce my premium from £1500 to £700.. especially if there are no curefews, and if the premium doesnt raise during the course of the year(regardless of how you drive), and you still get your ncb, i might just have to call one of them and ask, because based on the assumptions ive made theres literally no downside to it, which im finding hard to believe

As I said above, the downsides I found were that they were more expensive to start with no guarentee of any reduction in future premium.

A couple of quotes from the ingenie website....
The cost of your insurance is reviewed every three months with a discount applied to the best and most improved drivers in the community
..... pretty much covered their backs with that one ;)
The cost of your insurance is reviewed every three months, rather than once a year like most insurance policies. If you have driven well enough to receive a discount, this will be deducted from your direct debit payments if you pay monthly, or via a rebate if you pay annually
.... who decides what is well enough, especially as they already have your money?

What if someone needs to borrow your car? They may drive a bit fast and you get penalised.

My sister did over 1000 miles in my car a little while back in 2 weeks.

Would depend on the terms and conditions but from the insurer's viewpoint it makes little difference whether it's you driving like a tool or your named driver driving like a tool - they'll end up paying for the accident either way.

These boxes just aren't worth it:

1: they dont have to reduce your premium, even if you're Mr. A. Sensible

2: they monitor where and when and how you are, every time you're in the car. - do you really want this?

3: if you are ever involved in an accident, If you were speeding, maybe even just 1 mph over the limit, they will use that as an excuse not to pay out.

4: I'm sure it won't be long before the police require all insurance companies to share information about offences, and then you can expect to get fines through the post (PLEASE NTE THIS POINT IS A PREDICTION)

Now the benefit of reduced cost isn't bad, but I would never sign up to this.
