I'm sorry if this has been posted before but if that's been the case then I'd be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.
I found the one I wanted in Pets At Home. I've tried to find a link to re-post from their website but can't find it online. Can't remember the brand.
It's £38 and is a tape type retractable, 8 metre, one for large/extra large dogs. It's for a friend of mine. Tried the smaller cord type leads but they have broken easily. Dog has a tendency to run quickly at times so need something strong. The current tape one has just broken but have had many years of use from it. Just wondering if anyone knows of anything similar online for cheaper?
Would be grateful if you could let me know.

Are you referring to the Flexi leads? If so then yes, these are the prices. For a retractable lead you don't want to buy cheap as they are tailored to the size/weight of the dog, so for instance if he takes off all of a sudden and you're not quick enough to press the brake button, then the lead wont snap (as would happen if you'd of purchased a cheaper one meant for a smaller dog). It's all about the strength of the flexi lead mechanism compared to the dog weight. Does this makes sense?
I have an 8 metre one for dogs up to 20kg and I recall it was between £25/300 -
Did you look at Amazon?
For example:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flexi-Compact-3-Tape-Black/dp/B000A215F2/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1373307754&sr=1-2&keywords=large+flexi+tape
Big choice there:

Just make sure you got the large bread one.0 -
I'd advocate against a flexi lead and get one of these http://www.viovet.co.uk/Pet_Store_Items-Dogs-Collars_and_Leads-Leads-Training_Leads-Halti_Training_Leads/c158_3263_159_3561_3814_5835/category.html?quick_find=124612&gclid=COek1trMoLgCFQbKtAodyngAfw
It is soft, very comfy and is not dangerous. Flexi leads are so easy to tangle around other dogs with the wire and they are incredibly difficult to recognise from a distance- hard to judge if your dog is friendly or not and most people judge by the presence of a lead. It extends to 2m so plenty of freedom and if you did want to extend the freedom without letting him off you could use a lunge line or long line which is far more visible and safer. Also if you are walking by a road it is hard to stop a flexi lead and retract it in before your dog walks in front of a car!! I've seen this happen several times.

I had a flexi lead for my dog and hated it. She got one of these now and I love it .

Try ebay as well - I had my flexi lead from there. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Thank you all for your advice, much appreciated. Have checked in with who I'm buying it for and they'd like to stick with a retractable lead. Going to get one from amazon I think.0

I have that very lead, and I can tell you it held my giant breed dog with no problem, and she was a real strong puller. Had it a couple of years now and it still looks new.0
