I'm being charged for charges taking me over my o/draft limit!

I was hoping someone might be able to help me, as i'm a little confused on whether I can try and claim back some/any of my bank account charges.

I have a Reward current account with Halifax, with a fee-free over-draft limit of £300.

I am caught in a cycle, which I am struggling to get out of, where by bank charges go onto my account on the 1st of every month, and i'm lost as to (a) if its this month that charges will be going on and (b) how much they are.

The charges are now increasing as each month passes, because of the cycle i'm caught up in.

This month, my balance was £297.73, and they then placed £40 of charges onto my account, thus, taking my over my over-draft limit.
When I spoke to Halifax to actually see if they would charge for having an un-planned over-draft, they said yes.

I did try and make my point about the cycle being ever deteriorating, and when would it stop, and was met with little support.

These charges have been going on for about 18mths now, and i'm really struggling.

What i'd like to know, if whether banks can charge customers for charges that take them over their planned over-draft limits?

Many thanks, Amie.

Yes, banks can charge for that.
It's an arranged overdraft of £300, the bank argue that you are responsible to ensure you stay within that limit, you realise you are going to get charges every month so should have taken those into consideration.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

They will write to you every month to let you know exactly how much will be applied and the Halifax charges are applied on the first working day of the month. Usually the second month after you use your overdraft. So you use it in July, you'll be charged in September. Simple!

So let me get this right.
You claim you are stuck in a cycle of charges which has been going on for about 18 months.
But you still need to ask "(a) if its this month that charges will be going on and (b) how much they" ???

I suggest you pop over to the Debt Free Wannabe board and post your SoA there (details of how to do that are in a sticky there) and I'm sure they'll soon show how you can back in the black :)

If you are consistently incurring charges, and seemingly doing nothing to resolve this, then you won't be able to reclaim. If you are in financial hardship, you can give it a try, but if it is just purely because you can't manage your account properly and haven't budgeted, the charges will remain and you'll have to pay. It can be a harsh lesson, but a necessary lesson, banks provide us with accounts, staff to manage those accounts, cards, the facility to pay bills automatically and so on, yet don't charge anything for this. Mis-use what they are providing and they will definitely make you pay for that
