Painting metal gate with a little rust - options please

Have an existing iron garden which ws painted maybe seven or eight years ago. It now needs to be recoated as the paint has started to bubble with rust under the paint which can be 'picked off' in some spots.

Hence am wire brushing as much off as possible and then using a file where the brush wont fit to get to a secure surface.

This is leaving a mixture of bare metal, patches of secure existing paint (the majority of the gate) and some rust (a little).

Whats the best option for paint please? One that requires no primer ideally. e.g. Hammerite and if so which type please?

Thnks as always.

  • It will always be a better job if you use primer, but hammerite does claim to be 'straight to metal'.

Depends on how soon you want to be re-doing it.

remember if you use Hammerite you will only clean up the brushes with their special formulated solvent cleaner. Best buy an el-cheapo brush and chuck it when done.

If you want to stabilise the rust before painting, then there's a liquid called Kurust that can be painted onto rusty metal. Any good motoring store should sell it.

Otherwise, Hammerite sticks pretty well to bare metal. The only problem I've had with it is that the paint is quite brittle - it chips easily when bashed.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
