Having had to pay £12,000 to repatriate a relative I would never travel out of the UK without insurance. I would also make sure my relatives knew the whereabouts of the documents. There's no point buying it if no one knows it's there and are able to use it on your behalf if you're not able.

It's a must have even in the E.U. (have heard some horror stories about hospitals not taking them - just wonder why we don't insist on them here)

I always get insurance if I'm travelling abroad. I don't usually to travel within the UK. That said, when I'm travelling in the UK I'm usually either staying with friends or family (so no issue re: cancellation costs if I couldn't go) or for a short break (so the possible loss is likely to be one night's hotel costs, not a week or two, or the costs of renting a cottage) If I were booking for a longer period or booking a holiday cottage where I'd be liable to pay the full cost even if I had to cancel I would probably take out insurance.

Fortunately I've never had to claim - the only time I've needed medical help when I was travelling my EHIC was enough, but I wouldn't risk going overseas without it.

I also always e-mail copies of the documents to myself and the family member who is listed as my emergency contact on my passport, and if I'm travelling with anyone I will let them know where my documents are, too.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
