modifying a product and warranty

hi, I recently purchased a shower, which I fitted myself. during the fitting the lower cover plate which hides the pipe coming out of the wall could not be fitted so I removed a small amount of plastic (2cm x 1cm) to allow room for the pipe, this does not affect the exterior look or the water proofing of the shower, and is not on the main unit with all the electrics and pipe work.
the shower didn't work and an engineer came and said it was the PCB that was at fault but he could not repair it as the shower had been modified and thus nullified the warranty. I contacted the firm (creda), who say they can't do anything. I imagine this modification is frequently done to allow access of pipes. is there anything I can do?
thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully give me some advice

Forget the warranty and use the SOGA to get a remedy from the retailer. Make sure you get/keep a copy of the engineer's report showing that the fault is due a failed PCB. Where did you get the shower from?
  • thanks for a super quick reply
unfortunately I purchased it on eBay from a private seller. it was a new product and creda said they would honour the 12 month guarantee, but then have used the fact it was modified to not complete the repair.

The joys of buying on EBay. You will need to take it up with the seller.

The problem will be that if the OP opens a paypal or ebay dispute they will be asked to return the shower in the same condition as it was received.
As it's now been "modified", this can't be done.
but then have used the fact it was modified to not complete the repair.

This sort of exclusion is pretty standard for anything under warranty and it is stated in the T&C's on the Creda website.
This guarantee is subject to the following conditions:
The appliance has not been altered, serviced, maintained, dismantled, or otherwise interfered with by any person not authorised by us
