When it comes to ebooks, I'm a complete novice. I downloaded Kindle for my tablet, and some free books from Amazon. To my disappointment, I couldn't read them without being online. I downloaded Calibre to convert them, but they are protected. Does this mean I have to be online to read anything I download from Amazon?

You need to be online to download them but then you should be able to read them off-line.
Have you tried opening them on-line then reading them off-line ?0 -
That's what I thought. Downloaded them when online, but couldn't read them, as I wasn't in WiFi range. Must have done something wrong then.0

Does Kindle home page on your tablet show Cloud and Device? Are you on the Cloud option trying to view books there? Tap device and see what is there.
Alternatively did you select your tablet as the device to download to from Amazon, if you have downloaded to other device(s) in the past?
Maybe they are just still in the Cloud waiting to actually be downloaded to your tablet.0 -
Tnanks Onzey. I'll check that out. I did download to my pc as well. If somethings in the 'cloud', can I download to either my pc or my tablet, or both?0

Sounds like it might be as onzey says, you dont need a wifi connection to read the books.
Not sure about your other question OP.0 -

If you go to your account on Amazon and then Manage your Kindle you should find your books and can choose which device to download to.0 -
Thanks for that. Sorted. :j0

I have this problem with Google Books on Android. If you "download" a book it will appear in your library while you are online, even though it is only stored online, so once you go offline you can't access it. When you first get the book it will have the appearance that you have downloaded it when you haven't. I think you have to actively download it to your device to use offline. I don't know why these companies assume everyone is always online 100% of the time and will never find themselves in a place that has no available internet connection, which might be the one time you might actually want to do a bit of **** reading.0
