Possible Paypal phish?

I recently received an email from Paypal (or purporting to be from them anyway), asking me to confirm my details with them as part of a periodic review.

Being a bit wary, I emailed Paypal and asked them specifically whether this was genuine or whether it was a scam - and have not received a reply. I haven't clicked the links or anything (which, incidentally, appear the same as that when you log into the genuine paypal site - but you can write anything you like down for a link and it might not be the same as the underlying web address if you know what I mean).

Has anyone had this as well - or know whether it's genuine or a naughty phishy?

paypal will never contact you by email and ask you to confirm details

they also advise you against clicking on any links in emails (sometimes I am told - techies correct if wrong - can activate keystroke viruses??)

when you get one of these emails just hovering mouse over any links causes the url the link will take you to show in lower area of window
they are often unregistred sites and just ip numbers!

just delete these things and don't click on links

Not true. The link shown in the lower part of the browser can also be spoofed.

It's probably a scam as most companies would never send you an email asking to re-enter your details.

As for keystroke viruses when clicking?
Not really, it'll only happen if you let it download.
Usually your browser will ask you if you want to download it (Alarm bells should be ringing!!!!) you should just click no.

If ANY email that purports to come from Paypal or Ebay begins with the greeting : "Dear Paypal/Ebay user...." it's a spoof/scam/phishing attempt!!! End of story no exceptions. Either ignore/delete or forward to spoof@paypal/ebay... just DON'T click any links:money: !
  • Yes I have had one or two of these in the past.

Do as SaraSeahorse says and forward it to spoof@paypal.com

    Thanks all.

I emailed it as suggested. Two days later, got a similar one purporting to be from Ebay! *rolls eyes* Where's it all going to end? :(

Glad I checked here first! :)

I had the Paypal one about six weeks ago, ignored it and have used my Paypal account without problesm since, despite the email's warning that I wouldn't be able to.

I also get several from "HSBC" bank inviting me as an account holder to re-enter my details, despite the fact that I've never held an account at HSBC :rotfl:

Me too, I reckon I must get 'em from both paypal and ebay every time I use them.

It scares me an I NEVER EVER open them.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Using paypal or ebay should not trigger these phishing mails as they are nothing to do with the official sites. As others have said these mails are quite random and are even sent to email addresses not associated with either paypal or ebay.

For more information there is now a sticky post on the ebay board about these emails.
