PayPal Refund Help

Hi, first post on the forum, hope someone has had experience of something similar to this.
Basically I have made a mistake listing an iPhone on eBay. I got it as a free upgrade but decided to sell it on because I needed the cash. I listed it before I had actually taken delivery of it and it sold. The guy paid me on paypal and I withdrew the money and used it to part pay off a credit card. Initially I was told it would be delivered within 5 days but this came and went and then I got a message to tell me that the model was temporarily out of stock so now I have no idea when it will come, I can either get a different phone or wait which could take weeks.
Anyway after some deliberation I decided that I didn't want the buyer to be out of pocket so I issued a refund (he didn't request one I just sent it). I don't have the money in my bank account but I expected/hoped that if the money wasn't there then paypal would lay it out and I would be able to cover the negative balance when I get paid in a couple of weeks. Am I right in this assumption and if not then what will happen? I already feel bad for messing this guy around and don't want him to be out of pocket for two weeks until I can afford to pay him back directly. In my paypal account now it says that I have refunded him but it hasn't gone off my balance yet and it says it will take a few days until they try to take a payment from my bank account.

You've taken a chance, used the paypal money before you'd even received the goods that you sold, and then expect your bank/paypal to take the loss. So now you are in a mess. Sorry to be a heavyweight but what you've done is called fraud. I assume you are fairly young but now is a good time to sort the mess out so something like this does not follow you into later life (i.e. overspending/debt).
Personally I'd take the next few days to look at your budget (parts of the forum on here to help with cost cutting and prioritising debts). Its time to take control of your finances.
The reason I am writing this is the situation has happened, either the money is there or it isn't.., paypal will request the money from your bank account. Three days after you issued the refund. You don't say if you have an overdraft facility so we/I have no idea what will happen. Can u find a way to get some money into your bank account (work extra hours, another part time job whatever) so at least you can sort something out in the next few weeks to make up for the overspending you must be doing to be in this situation? If the money isn't drawable from your bank account, they will refuse the DD (if that's how you have set up paypal). Then paypal will chase you for the money, and you will be able to pay it out of the wages due in two weeks. But it will affect your ebay account. And its never wise to spend money before you have it so look now at your finances and sort them out.
Please don't look at payday loans as a solution, they aren't.0 -
Firstly don't apologise for as you call it, being a heavyweight, because I agree that although it wasn't intentional, it is effectively fraud and I appreciate your feedback.
I get paid on the 25th, so it's not a situation that will drag out, it will be resolved one way or another by then. What i wanted to know was will the refund go through because although its wrong I would rather paypal take the hit for a couple of weeks than a guy who maybe can't afford it as the lesser of two evils.0 -
It will do. But please try and sort your finances out.0

Thanks for your help, and yes I will do, I appreciate your advice.0

Assuming you have a bank direct debit set up then two things could happen. Either bank will decline the DD and charge you a fee for refusing it, and PayPal will also charge you for an unpaid. Or bank will pay out and put you into an overdraft.
What you have done, perhaps unintentionally, is to pull a scam sometimes referred to as the pay day loan scam ( or variations on that theme). Sell something to effectively borrow money from the buyer (victim) and then wait until you have funds to repay them. When it is done correctly it can save a person in financial difficulty the fees associated with a payday loan. In your case if this goes wrong you are going to end up out of pocket and probably with no PayPal account or eBay account in the future.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Yeah "Pay Day Paypal Loan " scam, the words sprang out to me by about the 2nd sentence, selling an item you havent got for a lot of money it is the Iphone too how unoriginal, the scamming ebayers choice of article, classic , the poor trusting buyer is none the wiser until no item arrives, and "oh I had no idea selling an item I dont even own was illegal!" Doohhhhh
DING DONG that is the sound of the bell being twanged on my other leg!NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself" :eek:0 -
