Taking a car abroad without a V5

I'm on the point of buying a used car from a dealer next week.

We were planning on going on holiday abroad in August i.e. within a few weeks of buying it.

However I am now thinking that I may not have the docs in my name returned from DVLA Swansea in time before we go.

Is there any way round this?

What if I take a photocopy of both parts of the V5 and the original receipt for the car?

Thanks in advance.

  • I recently bought a car and took it abroad 3 weeks later. I took the new keepers tear off part of the V5 (as well as driving licence and insurance certificate) and have to admit that I didn't consider that it might not be enough.

As it doesn't prove ownership, does one actually need to take it?

No although if stopped it could be a massive hassle..

It's the potential massive hassle that's bothering me - especially as we intend going outwith the EU - so we get Border Police checking all sorts.

Part 10 - the little green bit V5C will be the only original part that we'll have and it'll be filled in by hand, by me.

Border guards in out of the way places may not be au fait with the 'crazy British system', as they say.

We need to have a Green Card too - despite most Insurance reps saying you don't need one in Europe these days - they mean for the EU and a few others like Norway and Switzerland.
