I'm looking into going into a house share with someone (after meeting them of course). I don't like where I live now mainly for safety reasons because the people in this multi-person building keep having trouble. I'm considering moving there within the next 2 months as I also want to work there.

My family told me I shouldn't go there because it's rough but I don't like any of the places around here enough to move there so if there are safe areas then I can consider them. I get scared when faced with chavs and drunks and violence etc (likely to encounter this on Friday/Saturday near the central clubs!) so need to find one of the better areas.

I want somewhere with regular transport to the city centre, preferably somewhere very near it. I am worried about the drunks near the pubs and clubs but if I find somewhere just outside then it shouldn't be a major problem.

So, which are the safest areas and the areas where I'm least likely to have problems with the things I mentioned?

    Where do you live currently?

I grew up in one of the most affluent parts of Cardiff and then lived in one of the roughest areas for many years. I wouldn't necessarily say the posher area was better. ;)

I'd say for a first timer avoid Adamsdown, Ely, Splott and Tremorfa and Riverside. Llandaff North, Whitchurch and Canton are worth a look, or the Heath/Cathays if you want to live like a student.

Honestly, I'm 35 and have never come to harm in Cardiff (despite doing some really daft things sometimes!).

It's not always easy to get to the train stations though. ;)

I already live in one and have lived in several similar places all my life so I want something new. The trains are great but I don't want to travel there from a town, I want to actually live in/near it. Cardiff is the only place I have taken a liking to. :)

    Agree^^

Lived there for 3 years and never had any trouble. Obviously there are places to avoid as in any city. I would second the areas highlighted by notanewuser :T

Without giving my location I live 10 minutes train ride from central. :p

    Thanks :) Noted!

I would love to know where you live if the whole of Cardiff is considered rough!

Cardiff is lovely. Why not look into Lloyd George Avenue/Atlantic Wharf area of Cardiff Bay? Within walking distance of the city centre, nice area.

Do you work in Cardiff centre?

Roath is a nice area, quite desirable to many, it's central, might want to avoid the most sudent-y areas of it though, those nearest Cathays - Cathays is student-ville so you'd probably want to avoid that.

Canton is central and supposed to be ok, though I've no personal experience of it. Gabalfa area is a short trip to town centre and though it's proably got a rough image I've heard from someone who's lived there for 10 years that he's never had any problems and doesn't understand the reputation.

The Heath area up by the main hospital is probably quite nice.

Grangetown is probably good to avoid. No offense intended to anyone who lives there!!

Cardiff is lovely, no rougher than any other city or large town,
you need to decide if living so close to the centre is right for you
as others have said some nice areas on the outskirts
