    1) It can be done. But it is not advisable. It involves complications for you and the Landlord and makes the end of the tenancy messy.
    2) Use fractions if you really have to do it

Your girlfriend needs to get her act together and find the money. She needs to get her head around the issues arising from 4 week pay and monthly bills. As mije1983 points out, the pay dates will come right at the end of November. So the problem will sort itself out by then if your girlfriend cannot scrape a months rent together sooner. But beware - if she does not get used to always keeping a months rent in hand between payday and the next rent day, then sometime around late spring she will be in trouble again

I'm not sure whether I'm missing something, but why will it be messy if we change the rent date? If it moves from 1st to 10th of the month, how does that cause problems for anyone?

Also, I'm still not clear on working out the pro-rata rent amount - "use fractions" doesn't really help. Do I divide my month rent by 30 or 31 days?

As for my gf managing getting her act together, that's slightly harah, it's not like she's missed the rent, it's just the way the start date of the new job has fallen has put her in this situation & not many people have a spare £550 lying around.

People just aren't reading the posts properly, we don't have a problem with her getting paid every 4 weeks, it's just the way her first wage falls means she'll miss August's rent date, hence why we want to change the rent date & pay the pro-rata amount from 1st - 10th.

Thanks for the responses, but I'll just go straight to the LA. i was hoping to get some clarity but I'm just getting more confused!

    Talk to your landlord.

There is no issue changing the payment date, providing he agrees. Get the agreement confirmed in writing to avoid misunderstandings later.

    * but you will still need to pay calender monthly, on the same date each month (NOT 4 weekly).

    * it will not affect the contract/tenancy agreement. The 'Tenancy Periods' will remain unchanged(this becomes important when you give notice).

    * to calculate your daily rate:

    Rent x 12 (months) / 365 days.

Housing allowance gets paid every 4 weeks so there are millions of us in this situation. There just isn't a good way to change the 'monthly due date' because you're gf don't get paid monthly, she gets paid every 4 weeks. The landlord is quickly going to realise this and I doubt he'll see the point in changing payment dates, because there's no stable calendar month date that will be useful to you other than July's. They will very rarely match up to your gf's 4 weekly pay cycle. Obviously he will be working on a calendar month cycle and won't want to change the payment dates for every month thereafter because your gf is being paid later than usual in July.., and four weekly thereafter.

As others have said on here, you ust have to make up the rent whatever way you can the first month, and keep an eye on how much you've got in the bank. If you do it properly it is nice to have that 13 month 'bonus' even if some months its a bit of a strain making up the extra.

As I've said before I only want to change it to the 10th of the month, I don't want to change the date each month, after that we're fine.

I've had my question answered, thanks anyway.

Your options with the Landlord are
    • To agree that the rent is paid after the 10th. Unsatisfactory because it is effectively late. Even if you agree it with the LL it may cause him problems which will leave a nasty taste.
    • To pay 10 days instead of a month and then pay a month on the 10th. This crops up on here from time to time at the end of a tenancy when there are arguments about how much to pay for the fraction of a month left - or about when the tenancy period ends
As for the comment about getting her act together, I think it is fair comment. She has changed her job, she and you need to work out how to scrape the money together. Heck, I don't like payday loans, but this is a situation where one might plug the gap - as long as only the rent is borrowed and it is paid back on pay day. The period it is require for reduces each month and if she saves, the amount required will reduce too.

People are reading the posts properly AFAICS.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Thanks but G_M's answered my question.
  • Why will she get paid on the 9th of August? Is that the next payroll date that her new employers have told her?
