How do I clean the sole plate of an iron?

My son dropped my iron onto a nylon carpet whilst it was hot and didn't tell me. I now can't use my iron as it will not glide due to the melted nylon - does anyone have an idea of how to clean it?

Hi,
I would get iron as hot as possible, so as to melt the nylon, then put an old towel over a piece of wood, or something to give you an edge, and then run the iron down the edge, shifting the towel a bit each time, to give you a clean bit, and get as much off as you can. Then let iron cool a bit and use one of those green scourer things, or a sponge and a drop salt, with some washing up liquid and rub gently.0 -

If its one of those teflon coated modern fangle dangle irons....this takes the coating off of the iron.........

Try soaking the iron plate in white vinegar. Use a paint tray or something similar. At least overnight should suffice. The mild acid in the vinegar should be strong enough to break down the nylon stuff.

This works a treat - hot iron and a candle! It's true it's messy but it does work and the wick is a good scraper without scratching the face of the iron, particularly if it's not ceramic. Obviously you need lots of old rag to do this on and be careful not to lift the iron towards you wen yr having a look see because some of the wax could get in through the holes and at the end rub the iron over more clean rag to ensure nothing like that. Obviously you need a meaty candle and it will smell and steam too so keep your face clear too - you know just be sensible but I promise you it will work - good luck!;)Jdubb0
