I remember getting lost in Dublin when I was a kid with my Aunt driving and stopped to ask a policeman. He said to take the next left and then a host of other directions. Looking where he was pointing though the next left had a no entry sign as it was a one way street. Asked him if he meant the one after and he said no, its quicker to go down this one and if someone says anything just tell them you're not from around here :)

Driving in Ireland is fine other than road quality but if you've been hiring cars then you know what to expect on that front anyway. As long as your insurances are ok (and offically you should have a GB plate or badge) then you'll be fine and there isnt any special equipment requirements etc like there is in some european countries.

I'm taking two magnetic GB plates. One will go on the car at Holyhead, and come off at the outskirts of Co Dublin. On the off chance we get asked, then it must have fallen off, but I have a spare!!

Very wise - and exactly one of the areas of Ireland I was thinking of.
I purposely didn't exaggerate the anti-English tendencies because on the whole there isn't any openly.
But it exists and always will.

The issue with GB sticker is really nonsense.

Firstly, anyone knows from the car's licence plate that it's an English car.

Secondly, we take our English car to Ireland at least once a year and we'v been doing it for the last 20-odd years. We've never had a problem with locals disliking it or us.

Just for the record, I ( the OP) don't have any issue. I just don't like the things, full stop. That's why I bought magnetic ones, so they don't stay on the car. I only listed them as they are technically, at least, a requirement.

    You're missing the point.
A lot of Irish people will drive around in an English reg car - they may be back home on holiday or simply haven't paid the VRT and switched to an Irish reg.
But few of them would willingly put a GB sticker on their car.
As I wrote earlier there is a residual anti-English sentiment in certain areas of the country and although the chances of your car being vandalised are not high they are still greater than that of an Irish reg car.
I wish it wasn't the case but after 25 years of living here I can assure you it is.
