So you're going to spend £1000+ on a mac to browse the net, send/receive emails and do some office based work? I'm an Apple fanboy as people may call me, but I think you could buy a PC for half the price (or less) to cope with what you want to do...

I don't think MAC is faster. If you prepare to spend the same amount of money for MAC on PC. I believe PC will give you better spec.

a £2000 mac would likely be faster than a £200 PC.
But if you compare equal prices, then the PC will have the edge, as MAC's come at a premium

But if all you really want for is for browsing and such, then a cheap laptop might be the better option

For what you are doing, I think you can consider intel i5 ultrabook. It is about £600

My current PC is quad core, 500GB hard drive, with 6GB memory, and I have very few problems with it. It's almost three years old, and I generally replace after this time, although there is loads of life left in it.

With having £500 John Lewis vouchers burning a hole in my pocket, thought to 'invest' in new technology, but before deciding, thought to ask the experts for their opinions.

Have given me lots of food for thought, much appreciated.

If you don't have a time limit on your vouchers, keep them for when you will need to use them. If your current computer is fine, just keep it, and use it until it's time to let go. If it's getting slower, a good clean up should do the trick. I can't honestly see the need for updating a computer which is in perfectly good nick, just because it's 3 years old....should have loads of life still left in it.

be brave, post a hijackthis log, and you will get advice on what can be removed https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849 and how to do it.

it really should have at least another 5 years of of life left in it if treated well, quad core 500GB 6GB is a good spec, JL has a lot of options for £500's worth of vouchers.

avoiding junk/toolbars is just a matter of reading what comes up when you install software with bundled toolbars, and unticking the optional bloat

Careful buying a 13 inch MacbookPro - they're only dual core processors and nothing like the beasts that the 15s are. They're also due to be replaced 'soon' I reckon. Make sure you compare like with like with Mac against PC - this has got easier with Apple's switch to Intel. You can get PC laptops just as thin - look for Ultrabooks. I don't think Windows 8 needs a lot of re-learning, certainly not from Windows 7 anyway.

Have saved page from link, and will have a look later. Thanks for advice.

Three months ago I upgraded to fibre optic broadband (PlusNet), the engineer's reading is 80 meg at the socket, and expected my PC to zip along.

Will have a look at the link, but have a whisky first :D
