It may be worth naming the agent, which if on MSE (this is one of the largest websites in the country) may have some effect in getting the problem sorted.

Don't do that! Naming and shaming could lead to a lot of trouble for you.

It's not likely to lead to a lot of trouble. As long as its factual it's not likely to lead to anything other than some serious grumpiness.

But i wouldn't bother unless you exhaust your options to deal with it, it's unlikely to produce results.

    1. It's against the rules of the forum I believe.

    2. If you have your facts wrong it's possible for you to be sued for libel. Don't laugh, it has happened.

    3. MSE could be joined in an action against you and they would look to recover their costs from you.

This is true, however what they would most likely do is ask for the post to be removed OR ELSE they would be taken to court. Solicitor's fees are expensive. Letters containing threats are cheap.

This has happened before, many a time. MSE receives legal threat, posts are removed and message goes up saying "we're not allowing discussion on XYZ because..." and then XYZ gets roundly mocked by everyone (Sunil Dhown of IRD Homes being a case in point, Google his name to see how well it went for him - hint, not well.)

I'm not. Can you imagine, say, the Praise Vent and Warnings board if that policy existed? Can you imagine ANY of the boards, given that they deal with consumer rights, not being able to name companies concerned? It would render the whole exercise pointless.

My daughter and her friends won't be naming and shaming anywhere until this time next year. They have to have some sort of on going relationship with the estate agent, not to mention the fact that both the return of deposit from this house and the previous one are at the discretion of this agent. I'm fairly sure that there will be more to come and the review will make interesting reading I think.

"the fact that both the return of deposit from this house and the previous one are at the discretion of this agent."

The agent is acting for the Landlord with this property and the previous property.
If your daughter and her friends have now left the last property they need to apply for the deposit back in full.
If they have written evidence that the new property was advertised with Internet then point this out to the letting agents on monday.
No joy contact trading standards, the university and CAB for advice
As others have said write a letter to the Landlord CC the letting agent asking about the Internet
