PS3 Query...

Okay, not sure if this is the right place to ask it but not sure where else it fits.

I want a PS3 and my PS2 is on it's way out but the question is how much can they go down. I've heard arguments that the components in a PS3 are expensive to produce and therefore it's unlikely the price will come down much more than it already is but I'm never sure whether to believe this or not, so does anyone understand the 'under the hood' stuff in the PS3 vs PS2 and can you advise?

It may come down in price depending on market forces etc which are impossible to predict. But it is also true that Sony are already making a large loss on every one sold so that will certainly be a large negative factor in the price coming down. It is definitely true that the bill of materials in the PS3 (ie the parts list) is more expensive than the unit. So we're not just talking about expensive components but that it costs more to make than what they are selling it for. As the cost of components come down, Sony will simply be making less of a loss and I'm sure it will only be when they start making an actual reasonable profit on them they may reduce the unit cost but who knows when that will be. Blu Ray drives are still really expensive when they aren't subsidised by the manufacturer.

in five years time they will be £99, in eight years time they will be about £30 second hand on ebay.

Sony are making a loss on them - at the moment they're fighting for market share, plus the real money in games consoles is in the profit on the games.

they *might* come down 15-20% in the next year, consistent with the ps/2 history, and also more recently the xbox 360.

Thanks, I thought that was the case. The moneysaver in me is saying stick out till the PS2 dies and then upgrade, the gadget fan in me is saying buy it now :) Hopefully if they come down by a few pounds in the next year I'll be getting one next January :D

I do not think the price will fall so quick... the ps3 was not on sale in europe the last xmas so the first chance Sony has to really make some proffit is... yes... Xmas 07!

There will be some offers like 3 games on top, extra gamepad, etc but I do not think you will pay less than what it is now...

I am looking for one for myself now:

The cheapest I have found so far:

Amazon: £399 (console and free hd cable)

    Play.com: £475 - 2% quidco (console, hd cable, 3 games and 1 blueray movie)

Game: Was told the Game shops offer free finance for those who want to spread the costs, unsure about the cost of the unit now.

    Any better price out there?
