Can a seller do this? re charges

I won something yesterday from a seller in Germany. The Auction was in Sterling.
Tried to pay by paypal straight away. By clicking on the pay now button it took me to a their own checkout (sellers) which had changed the figures to Euros, added on a conversion and paypal charge! so increased the price I was expecting to pay by a third!
Nowhere on the auction did it say I had to pay in Euros as it was all in Sterling and I am not going to pay the paypal fees as I know that isn't on! I'd never have bid on it had I known.
What can I do? Ebay help isn't being very helpful
I've never had this happen before - I bought somehting from Poland on Thursday and paid in sterling as the auction stated no probs - they didn't try to change the currency.

You can use paypal to 'send money' directly, make sure you fill in the item number so it's linked to the auction.0

Assuming you were logged into Ebay.co.uk at the time then you are perfectly entitled to send the exact sterling amount , in sterling as per the auction. In that case do as socospice suggests and send payment directly via paypal. You always pay in the currency of the country you are logged into via ebay, so if for instance you were browsing via ebay. com you would automatically be expected to pay in dollars even though ebay converts the amount to show you the sterling equivalent when browsing.

thank you both. I shall pay direct from the paypal site then and see what happens. I was in ebay.co.uk for sure when I bought the item as I never look at the other versions .
Thanks
