Fee on Santander credit card

Hi,I have no idea if there is anything I can do about this but I thought it was worth asking.
I opened up a santander current account over a year ago in branch. The lady explained there was the account fee, which i was fine with. She also offered me a credit card. I hadn't ever really used credit cards before so my immediate reaction was no, but she said it was good to build up my credit rating. Stupidly, I agreed, but nothing was mentioned about fees for that account.
I used the card intermittently, then stopped in december i think. I checked my online banking every so often and it showed a balance of £24. Again, stupidly, i thought maybe i had overpaid so it was in credit (can that even happen on a credit card?).Then next thing i get a bill for £36, the £24 and a £12 late payment fee.
I have just phoned them and it is the first i have heard of a fee on this account. Is there anything I can do???

There's a £24 per year fee on the cashback credit card you have. This was possibly waived in your first year so you'd forgotten about it?

Weren't you getting statements? Or e-mails requesting you go view your statements online? Not quite sure how you thought you may be in credit, since the statement would have given you an amount to pay and a due by date...neither of which would be there if you were 'in credit'. ;)

Best thing to do?...pay the £36 ASAP. Then either familiarise yourself with the cards features/T&Cs or close it down.

You could also phone them up and ask nicely for the fee and penalty to be waived as you did not realise that you had to pay one.

Then, of course, cancel the card.

    Hi,
Thought I would just give an update.
I paid off the balance and then phoned them to cancel the card.
When I called them, the guy said, well as you only paid the annual fee recently and are now cancelling, I can refund you the money!
Great customer service from him, shame about the others!
