Student loans chasing for repayment of grant

I started uni in 2007/08 and dropped out after the end of the year. At the time I applied for a grant and received £2765 after providing the evidence. In March 2013 I was asked to repay the full amount or provide evidence again as the local authority I dealt with in 2007 had shut down and student finance took over.
I sent in all the required evidence but now have been told I will need to repay the full amount as they cannot verify the information with the local authority as they have now closed. They left me with no option as the advisor told me we cannot amend the information on the system any more.
They have told me I can email the appeals department for student finance but want to know where I stand as the advisor even said its such a long time ago they cannot verify the information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So you applied for a grant, got the money, but then dropped out and was never asked to repay the money at the time?
The rules are, if you drop out before the end of the year after receiving grant money, you have to give it back. Loans you don't and you go by the normal repayment method.0 -

Do you mean after the end of the academic year or the end of 2007?
Could you clarify what you mean by saying that the LA is now closed?0 -
Sorry to make it clear, I did finish the 1st year but dropped out at the end of the academic year 2007-08. The local authority I applied through was Kirklees at the time but was taken over by student finance direct after a few years as I've been told by them on the phone.
They are not asking me to repay the grant because I didn't complete the course, as they asked for the evidence again that I submitted in 2007. But apparently the evidence cannot be verified with Kirklees as they are now closed.0 -

Sorry to seem dense but was 2007/8 your first or your second year?0 -
07/08 was my first year.0
