Running water sounds...No obvious leaks...

I have an intermittent sound of running water in my house which is coming from either the loft or echoing in loft from airing cupboard. It goes away (sometimes) after the toilet is flushed but other than that is like a slow trickle, like a toilet which is running constantly (but having checked the toilets it is not this).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have Homecare but in my experience without telling them what the problem is Dynoplumb are a bit hit and miss (last time I had them out they caused a bigger leak than the one they fixed).
Alternatively I know a local plumber, but he can be expensive (because I guess you get what you pay for). But want to know if there is anything else obvious I should check first.

Sounds like it could be the loft tank that feeds the hot water cylinder. Sometimes these take an age to top up again each time the hot tap is run.
Try a morning without using hot water and see if the sound goes away?0 -
If you have a tank in the loft, the float valve may be letting by. Check if there are signs of water from the overflow pipe outside at loft height. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!

Turn your "stop !!!!" off for half n hour and listen to see if its gone if NOT it might be a leak in another close buy property or a mains leak outside your property .Keep in your thoughts the poor Beasts of burden around the World and curse All who do them harm.0

Have you tried listening IN the loft? Or in the airing cupboard?0

Thanks for all the responses, I've had a man go up in my loft and check the tank - there is no obvious leak but it appears that the valve is slowed to a trickle so taking forever to fill. It appears to be the cold water tank, not the heating (which is good because I really need it in this weather
).
I may just have to shut the stop coock off at night when I want to get sleep for a while...Mortgage Free since January 2018!0 -
