Saga Platinum Visa (credit limit mini-rant)

10,000 Posts Combo Breaker Rampant Recycler Hung up my suit!
I applied and got accepted for a Saga Visa CC for use while on holiday in America so that I don't incurr any transaction charges.
I got it back in January so that I could use it a few times and clear the balance in the hope that I would prove I was reliable so there would be no problem when I applied to raise my credit limit in time for my trip.
There was a £1000 limit to start with which is only to be expected but I was a bit miffed when I was told the max they would increase it by was £600 and it could not be raised again for another 6 months :(
Thankfully my holiday is all paid for and I will only have incidentals and evening meals to pay for while I am there but it has been a juggling act to make sure that I will have a zero balance on the card for my trip.

Just to add
If you make an extra payment within 5 days of the normal payment (DD) due date they cancel the DD, I did not know this and was wondering why my normal monthly payment had not been taken.
Annoyingly I have had to set up another SO to make the extra payment that they didn't take

So they don't want to give you a large limit entirely up to them. Plenty of other cards, go elsewhere, MBNA backed cards, give large limit from reading posts around here and from my own personal experience.

As for the payment, I would imagine it is written in the T&C's, if not on monthly statements that additional payments made a certain time or at any time will reduce or replace your direct debit payment.

Depends on the card, I have several cards and each tells you what they will do with regards extra payments.

Some take the DD regardless of extra payments.

Some reduce the DD payment if you make part of the minimum DD by another method.

Some won't take the DD payment if you make a payment at all in the statement month

Some won't only take it, if you make a payment to close to the DD date.

I have always found the info regarding this in the T&C's and/or on my statements under ways to pay normally.

I always now read T&C's of items such as CC throughly, even if I do it while on the train to/from work or on the bus going to/from shopping. Normally it's takes about 10 minutes max to read all the key points.
