asking for a pay rise help

Hello,

I work for a company that provides services to the NHS i am coming up to my first year review and i want to ask for a pay rise as i feel i am worth more and do more than other members of staff that get paid more.

the wages are based on the NHS pay bands - http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/working-in-the-nhs/pay-and-benefits/agenda-for-change-pay-rates/

it is said that you move up one pay point a year but i want more than that as i think it would much more far. one point is not that much but 4points is a more like it

how should i handle this?

I seriously doubt you are going to get it, the pay scales are usually stuck to. It is correct that you move up one increment a year, they are not going to bump you up four.

Are you doing more than is in your job description, have you taken on extra responsibilities? Maybe your job needs to be looked at to be re-graded into a higher band?

I also used to work for a company providing services to the NHS, even my manager admitted that my job should have been higher than a band 2. Didn't get me a payrise though. Amazing how they later seemed shocked when I handed my notice in and told them I was going for a job that paid a few grand more.

the point above me is only about £200 more a year i feel that i should get £1000 at least. the people that have the same job title as me are on £3-£4k more and do less.

Why do you think you are worth more? What have you done that has saved money/improved efficiency/above your current job description? Don't compare yourself to anyone else - what they are paid is irrelevant. Once you have a satsfactory answer that is how you ask for a bigger payrise.

Your approach depends on whether you are prepared to walk away from the job or not.

i don't want to walk away from the job but i feel that i should be on more money. i am not asking to be on what they are on as they have been at the company for 4/5 years but i am doing more than them.

what do i do either kick back and do what they do or pull my weight and help the team out? i do thing the other can't or don't want to do.

You do your job. After four years the others have legal rights - after one year you have practically none.

Sit back like they do or work? If i am only going to get £200 a year pay rise i think that’s a bit of a !!!! take tbh. Don’t you?
When i started it was ok. but now i am trained and helping others to train and respected member of the team as i have a lot of strengths that other don't have.
