Replacement Key

Hi,

Has anyone ever had to get a replacement BMW key? I need to get one for my car and the dealer wants north or £150! This is a bit steep and I just wondered whether anyone knows how to get one cheaper?

Thanks!

You bought a BMW, surely you expected parts to be expensive? In fact £150 isn't even that expensive compared to some.

Is it a newish car? or is it an old banger from the 1980's?

Agreed. If it is a newer car it might even be possible to start it with a laptop! ;)

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

You beat me to it. I would think it's actually cheaper to clone your own key than go the dealers.

If you have the working key, the famous shoe and key cutters in most town centres can cut and make you a transponder key for £30-£40
    Be happy...;)

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate the fact that, yes, parts for a BMW would be more expensive but it doesn't mean I want to roll over and just pay whatever they're asking without checking whether I could get it cheaper first :-)

It's a 2005 model, so it will need a key that requires programming to the vehicle.

Thanks, though, as I will ask the local key cutter whether they can cut it and do a transponder too.
