decorating question please

I want to strip off old woodchip wallpaper and paint the wall but I can't face putting lining paper up first. Could I just paint the plaster, is there some sort of primer that I could paint on first to give a better finish or should I bite the bullet with the lining paper ?

thanks as always

  • Hi,

depends on state of wall, I would think that once stripped wall maybe not perfect, hence the reason for the wood chip.

It depends on the quality of the plaster finish.

It maybe that the woodchip paper has been used to hide a poor wall. But then again the wall maybe fine.

You would be best to strip it and then, if poss post some pictures back up here for people to comment.

Plaster can be painted, but you need to get all of the residue of wallpaper paste off, fill any cracks or holes and sand.

If the wall is bad it may need re plastering or, as you suggest, relined.

Unless the wall surface is good and smooth I think you have to bite the bullet.. no amount of paint is going to smooth a rough surface enough to get an acceptable finish.
