Default on my Credit File due to Ex-Partner

Hey there, my first time posting on here after many visits to the forums. I am wondering if any of you have any knowledge or could offer me advice on a default I have on my credit rating from 2010.

Long story short, my ex-partner of 5 years could not get finance on a new car and at the time we were in a loving relationship so I did what many partners would do and did her a favour and got the finance out in my name in order for her to have a new car. Although the finance was taken out in my name, the direct debits were set up in the ex-partners bank account.

A couple of years later we broke up and within 6 months or so I began getting letters from the finance company stating payments hadn't been made. Ultimately due to my ex-partner not willing to make payments after me making many attempts to chase her, I ended up in getting a default.

I am now extremely worried I will not get a mortgage and have been advised I won't do until the default clears from my credit file which won't be for another 3 years. I am annoyed this has happened, however it was out of my control. I wonder if I can get the default removed as it wasn't my fault (even though being a nice guy and getting the finance out for my ex-partner is my fault!). Can anyone assist?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortuantly it was your fault as it was in your name whether your OH screwed you over or not.
When your OH stopped paying it was then your job to continue with the payments.
I'm afraid this default as you've said will stay on your file until 2016 and theres no chance you'll get it removed, it sounds harsh but if its in your name its your Debt no one else's...

Ps should be a lesson learned.

Unfortunately, as the finance is in your name, you are responsible for the payments.

It is highly unlikely you'll get the default removed.

As others have advised there's nothing incorrect about the default being on your credit file and you won't be able to get it removed.

The contract was between you and the lender, your ex wasn't mentioned anywhere on the contract. You had an obligation under that contract to pay them, and as you failed to do so, they rightly issued a default notice.

Any agreement between your ex and you is completely separate and nothing to do with the lender.

What happened to the car? As of course, you bought it and you own it.

I ended up in getting a default.

Contractually you are liable for the debt. So unfortunately the problem is yours. Nothing to do with the finance house what so ever.

It's everything to do with her, however the finance company won't care.
