How To Stop Inserted CD Automatically Playing in PC

Have PC with W2k and play mp3 files via winamp.

Usually I insert a cd for conversion to mp3, via CDX, and file info appears, I CDDB the tracklistings and I convert.

But now whenever I insert cd into cdr drive my winamp player is immediately engaged and starts playing the cd, and wiping my previous winamp playlist at the same time.

This happened after recent CD to Sony Minidisc transfers using their own software but only after years of using same without the urge to instantly play the cd.

The instant playing by winamp also causes a brief appearance by a GRACENOTES pop-up, which is Sony's cd info agent, so am suspicious that the Sony MD software has corrupted my usual set-up.

Cannot see an option on Sony software to remove this Gracenotes link, do not "associate" the Sony software with any files but the OMG they use to convert to Minidisc. Control Panel does not seem to allow me an option to stop a cd playing automatically on insertion.

As can be gleaned from this clumsy description I am not a Techie so ask for some leniency in offering any suggestions.

But can anyone advise? Just want to be able to transfer cds to mp3 without having to stop winamp playing the things immediately on insertion.

I use ASUSDVDTRACK as the main cd/dvd player....if that is significant.

Thanks for any who can help.

The solution below is for XP but may work in W2k as well.

    Start Windows Explorer.
Click the Tools menu, and select Folder Options.
Click on the File Types tab.
Highlight the AudioCD file type, and click Advanced.
Change the default action, which should be Play, to none.
Click OK twice, and click Close.

    Hope that works for you!

goto my computer and right click on the cd/dvd/rdd device required.
then click on properties and change the options there.
    ie select do not autoplay.
    Get some gorm.

You could try holding down the Caps key (not Caps Lock) while inserting the disk. This prevents CDs openening.

    Ta for the suggestions.

FFI: W2k doesn't have a File Types>Advanced option; just a Plug Ins tab page which just brings up a list of File Types including winamp but highlighting them gains nothing; it seems.

My Computer lists the ASUS D/E drives but right clicking etc doesn't give an option to alter playing mode; just driver details and option to playback via Digital CD or Analogue...whatever that means. It is defaulted on Digital and so has served me fine for years, hence no desire to change that option.

The Press Shift Key is working though.

Anyone had experience of Sony Sonicstage Software then....as am sure it has tampered with my playing modes after years of leaving them alone.

Think Uninstalling it then re-Installing might clear its recent bad behaviour?

Thanks to all for replies anyhow.
