don't assume that all sockets are fed vertically, spurs are sometimes fed hortizontally especially in kitchens, what the cable shouldn't do is go at an angle

I didn't know that! Good to know, although my house is old and the cables don't really take very organised routes anywhere. Most of them just come out the floor and in to a socket mounted on the skirting board, while the ones in the kitchen are winding all over the place and attached to the cupboards to reach sockets above the counters. With old houses, I wouldn't assume anything. Wires can be anywhere.

So you've got a downstairs socket supplied via the MCB on the upstairs circuit? Thats safe then for someone who doesn't know that.

There's nothing in Electrical or Buildings Regs that prohibits this.

Yes of course. But 95% of DIY peeps who knock off the downstairs MCB expect that it will isolate all downstairs sockets and either don't know how to or can't be bothered to 'test for dead'. So whilst it may be safe according to regs it really isn't safe in practical terms.

So you are suggesting that we should second guess people's inabilities and lack of competence to work with something which can kill them?
