Check the terms and conditions. These policies usually have a 30 day (some up to 90 days) limit and you have to start and finish in the UK within that timescale.
Yes you get an annual insurance but that does not mean you get365 days of continious cover.
Gosh! We went for 38 days, it never crossed my mind to check. I will next time if I ever get the chance to go again:rolleyes:Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......

ah! I've discovered that I can take out a student abroad long-term travel plan with Endsleigh Insurance which works out squillions of dollars cheaper than the University health plan.
I'm now trying to get permission from the Uni in America to allow me to replace their policy with this one. It seems almost to good to be true as it also covers some dental treatment which the Uni policy doesn't. Can anyone think of any drawbacks?
