Any way of buying a car with my BA Amex card

Ive tried new car brokers etc and spoken to a few dealers who have all said they dont take amex because their fees are too high.

I want to use my amex to buy a new citroen c4 and also benefit from the 2 for 1 voucher ba will give me. I have will shortly have enough airmiles for a business class flight to the US.

Can anyone help??

Ask them what the specific charge is and offer to meet them half way.

Will a car dealer accomodate a one off transaction with amex?

If they have the facility to accept AMEX - maybe if not a definite no no.

Have a word with Amex They had a campaign a few years ago, where you could inform them of retailers who did not take Amex. Not sure what they did with the info. I remember when I went to the USA back in the mid 80's for the first time. I had a corporate amex card. I was shocked by how unusable the card was. Cash in fact wqas king at the time. Spoilt the illusion of America the land of the credit card. Very few places took credit cards for fuel payments.

Still forget to pay for fuel before starting to fill up. On first gas station visit ..standing waiting for pump to to start.

I too have a BA Amex and my experience is that dealers who accept Amex are reluctant to take the card for full payment due to the charges, but they will normally take a deposit, so you could try and push them to see how much they would go to. Would at least help in adding to the miles.

If you get a matching free flight from Amex pay their 2.5-3% fee. Especially if you are looking to get a matching business class flight this could well be worth considering. Just make sure you do some comparisons on price with the likes of drivethedeal to nail the price down before you offer to pay on a credit card. Obviously check they take Amex before you start your potential purchase.

My dad was in a similar position a few years ago, tho not with Amex. He was buying a new Saxo, had bargined hard for it (it was pre-registered and he knew they wanted to shift it before the end of the month) and decided to go ahead. He didn't have any proper finance sorted out yet so he told them he wanted to put it on his Visa. Tho they did take Visa they tried to get him to pay the fees (their excuse was that they could afford to absorb the fees for smaller purchases but not for larger ones such as cars). He simply said OK then the deals off - he eventually got them to back down.

I think your first step should be to see if they have the facility to take Amex, if they do then you have two choices: offer to pay the fees or walk away in the hopes that they'll back down (but of course you risk them sticking to their guns).

Im pleased to report that some of the car brokers on this website will take fulll payment for a car by amex. Only I have to pay 3.75% handling fee.

So for approx £375 I wil receive 15000 airmiles and a companion voucher.

I expect to have 100,000 ba airmiles (mainly thanks to tesco) by late summmer so the business class flight is on!

Now where do we go !
