your friend could always get an external keyboard, which will be much easier for touch typing, and an external mouse, (I don't like the touchpad), these don't need to be expensive.
You don't need to buy MS Office, Open Office is free and compatable with MS Office.
Anti-virus and firewalls can all be got for free, I've had PCs and laptops for years, and never paid for any, no problems.
Most software can be found free, Foxit Reader is another,
That sounds encouraging. I'll tell her about Open Office as Microsoft is expensive.Sorry if it is a stupid question but is there enough on a new 'windows' computer to access a browser such as Google to access the internet once her broadband is up and running. I'm hoping to help her but I'm not too skilled technically myself. Thank you. Crimson0 -
You can choose whatever browser you want when you set the machine up, or change it anytime you wish.
PS: Google is not a browser, it's a search engine. Chrome is the Google browser.
Just stay away from PCW, whatever you do buy.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thank you macman. I've sent you a separate message. I hope you don't mind.

Does she need a laptop for portablity?
If not get a desktop instead.
Try to get windows 7 rather than 8 - the other deadly important thing is make sure you have enough RAM . . .
2gb is most common and will not run that quickly - 4gb will run very nicely!I was going to put the name of my plumbing business here so you know what I do should I give out any advice plumbing wise - however apparently I cant do that - go figure!!!!!

Thank you, mehera. My chum is very limited for space so she's interested in a laptop. I'm not sure if there's a choice with some of the laptops between Windows 7 or 8. I read on the forum that some laptops don't seem to be able to play new DVDs but I don't think that's too much of a consideration for my chum who is really just starting out - from nothing. We'll look out for 4gb ram, thanks.
All the help from everyone is much appreciated - thank you again to Macman.
