Is it possible to covert a single socket to double?

Options
I would like to have a single electrical socket converted to a double one.
Is this a relatively straightforward job (if possible)?

Cheers

Yes very straightforward, a simple swap over, no cabling involved.

Yes, the wiring layout is exactly the same, you only need to worry about adjusting the hole in the wall to fit (assuming its an internal fitting).

You can also get a 2 plug socket plate which fits onto a one plate mounting box. It does extend out further from the wall of course, but it is cheaper and quicker to fit.

If the single socket is flush mounted (backbox buried in the wall) and the wires are long enough you can fit a surface mounted double box (screwd to the wall) and double socket over the hole.

Alternatively there are some socket adaptors you can get that actually fit onto the existing backbox screwholes.

The converter type sockets to reuse the existing single back box are quite easy. Replacing the back box to use a standard double can be quite a bit of effort depending on the wall, not too bad for dry wall but a pain if you've got to remove/drill out fixings, chisel out for a larger box then make good.

Do bear in mind that if you are running out of sockets in a specific area and you have many high power appliances plugged in, that you do not exceed the capacity of the wiring/protective device.
If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button! ;)
