I read the other day you could remove the words from desktop icons on windows Vista. I have Home Premium Edition and tried what i was told to do but the words remained. Im now thinking that you can only remove them if you have Ultimate editions. Any clues as to this?
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
Just because it's free don't mean it's good

It is possible to use the mapping to a blank character
right click the icon and then rename hold the alt key and use the numbers on the keypad and enter 255 so its alt and 255 it doesnt work with the numers on the top so if your on a laptop hit num lock and use the numbers on the keyboard. it is the equavalent to typeing a character.
that will only work for 1 icon you can do another with alt and 255 release alt and 255 2 characters this allows you to do multiple icons and have no name displayed. just keep adding an alt and 2550
