Unsolicited letter addressed to me

I had some post with my name addressed on it. It's from a company that does services on gas boilers.

My property does not have gas connected and my main concern is how did they get my name.

Everytime I fill any form online or on paper, I always check that I don't want my details passed onto 3rd parties.

Plus I have signed up to Mail Preference Service.

Also I always use the term Miss but on the letter it says Ms. Not keen on that term

Any advice please?

The only advice I can give would be to shred it or rip it up, bin it and forget about it. Life's too short to be worrying about a bit of junk mail :)

Data is sold and resold so many times it because almost possible to ever find out how/ where the information originally came from. Ultimately complain to the MPS and they will deal with the company.

One or two bits of junk mail isn't normally a problem, but what may happen is that the mailing list that the OP is on could get passed on/sold to another retailer or marketing company.
If this happens it may end up as a spiraling problem with more and more unwanted mail as their name gets passed on again and again.

It's for this reason that whenever I received any unwanted mail, I contact the company who sent it asking for my details to be removed from their mailing lists and making it very clear that I do not want my name and address passed on to anyone else.

That is a lot of effort.

If it looks like junk it goes straight in the recycling, it makes no odds whether it is 1 letter or 10.

It doesn't really take much of an effort to do.

I only get 1 or 2 unwanted mails a month (and I want to keep the figure this low), so all it takes is a couple of phonecalls every month or so and if possible, I call on a freephone number so there is no cost involved.

I certainly don't, in fact I often look quite closely at it to see what techniques they are using to grab the readers attention in that very short window between picking it up and putting it in the bin.

Unfortunately for them a lot of companies don't seem to engage with a copywriter or decent designer who reallys knows his stuff so the leaflets usually carp.

The one that really got my attention was one from a CC company (if memory serves me correctly), on the front it looked like somebody had hand written something along the lines of 'Dear Postman, this is very important, please see it arrives to our customer safely' - after the disappointment of its contents I realised it was actually pre-printed on the front!

Although I could just be the weirdo of the street :D

I know a postie who loves junk mail, it keeps him in a job.

He says some days that is all he delivers on one of his walks.
