For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

The way she was ripping in to her for feeding her a kids a hot meal after they'd had a (free) school dinner

I know someone who expects her children to eat a school lunch because she doesn't cook them a meal at night. If they didn't eat a lunch then as far as she's concerned it's tough (and sometimes there's no hot food left and they are left to buy a sandwich). She buys in food to cook a meal for herself and her husband at night though.

I haven't read all the thread but am watching the program now . Surprised they aren't finding out why they only have x amount of money left for food , there may be ways of 're jiggling the budget......how ever suspect that might just spoil the agenda ?

I've just seen the girl go off to school wearing a Paul's boutique coat....maybe it was bought by someone else as a present.....

From what little I've seen either the chefs are clueless or there is indeed a hidden agenda

Food prices have increased, however as a % of pay food in the past was much more expensive

I think what let this show down was the lack of context - how did the 3 groups of people have so little money to spend on food, and how could this be improved would have better. Or just a show teaching people how to cook a meal for £1 pp. As someone that used to have to live on very little and know people that still do, I suspect in reality they pay for things that are not essentials, like sky, as you get caught into that trap of 'needing a treat'. I know that is hard to understand when you are on the outside, but when you live it you just want to feel 'normal'. Also, for the single mum, bringing up a school age child can be expensive, and if she hasn't got anyone guiding her to what she is entitled to and what the school will cover then its very difficult.

I think the show would be better following 3 groups in different situations for several months with a support network to help them. The show producers could find some very useful people on here! Much better than celebrity (though lovely) chefs who do not live in the real world! I would suggest a real-life cook, a real-life mum who goes to parenting groups etc/ activities that are free, a real-life person who has been in debt and got out of it.
