  • What struck me about it is that the Chefs could NOT get the food they wanted in the Supermarkets because they were too expensive.

I watched this program like most of you I afelt it did'nt go far enough, in teaching these people about, menu planning, cheap cuts of meat, bulking out mince using lentils, oats and batch cooking, slow cookers I could go on.I also think apart from Angela who won, I think they chose the wrong chef's ,some one like Delia Smith ,Mary Berry, or Nigel Slater I think would have been much better, Nigel uses probably expensive products But he uses up his left overs , I have just read his book "the 30minute cook" his way of talking about food has me droling.
Also I felt that the chef's were a little of touch with what thins cost I expect that as they can afford the prices sm charge that they just chuck in their trollies what they want with out looking at the price

    It's all mad isn't it.

I thank god for stumbling across this website a few years back - has really helped me in some tough times..
The opposite of what you know...is also true
  • Yes, they certainly could have picked better (or more suitable) chefs. Many years ago I stumbled on Jocasta Innes` "Paupers Cookbook" and I still remember how delightful HER approach was - humour as well as inspiration, nothing patronising in it, just thought of her and wondered what she would have thought of this sad effort!
    And another thing:
WHY, with all the other telly cookery progs drawn out into series, was this just a one-off?? Perhaps spread over a number of weeks this low-budget cooking/showing folks how to food shop (IF they had any idea themselves, that is)/meal-plan/cook from scratch could have helped the `clients` as well as many telly viewers, and they could have actually shown if and how the `clients` progressed.

What struck me is how on earth a family with two wages, one of which is software engineer which would be a good wage, could have so little to spend on food. I can only assume there was some massive overspend elsewhere. Wonder if any of the people shown had sky, massive phone costs, lots of debt from presents, a big mortgage or a big gas guzzler. That may have been part of the reason for the family not having enough money.

The show was interesting but it would have been better if the chefs had been given the money the family had for a month to feed their families and let them shop and cook for that. Showing them good recipes and cost savings by bulk buying and freezer blk cooking would have been far more use.

One of the families was caring for her mother, so perhaps that is why they had such a large and lovely house, or perhaps they are suffering from a shortfall in housing benefit?
