self employed when a carer at home?

for the last year my partner has been in my carers claim. income support for both of us. ( as with carers you dont claim jsa if unable to work) our son has special needs.
He has got very depressed this last year. feeling like he isnt doing what a man should do, in his eyes....going to work. yet its almost impossible for me with my son and his needs. but for his own sanity we decided he would look for work.
anyways...... he's been offered 2-3 days a week for 'odd' weeks. we need to know where to go with this. I have spoken to the dwp, they dont know either, and shall be ringing me back tomorrow.
the man hes been offered the job with is self employed. he told my partner that its £55 per day. 2-3 days a week. but only when he needs him. he told us that all we need to do is inform the dwp, so the income support stops. and put it as 2 or 3 days. i said 3. as if its 3 one week and i say 2 then its fraud. but then when he has no work for months will we have to then start the claim for income support carers again?
when you start 'normal' income support its about a 3 week wait. but on a carers claim its about 1-2 months or more. so we would be without the money for them periods.
has anyone had similar situation?
what did you do?
my friends partnher is self employed also, she told me all we have to do is ask for a self employed form and every year you write your dates,,hours etc worked. and amount. and they then do your next years tax credit etc award on this years amount.
but.......... how can we claim tax credits if its not a registered company? as the man who offered him it works for himself. he works all over the country, all year. 5 days a week. this is why its not full time as when he works away my partner cant go due to the problems we have at home/ the care for our son and his needs.
can i claim working tax credits when its just working for a person, not a company?
Thankyou xx

Is your partner going to be self-employed? It wasn't clear from your post
You can't just decide to be self-employed, it depends on the nature of the relationship. Sounds to me like this other person will be employing your partner in which case they should be taking care of the tax and NI.
Use this tool and see what it says: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/esi.htm
If he is genuinely self-employed, then you claim tax credits as a self-employed person. If this other person is going to become his employer then you can claim tax credits as an employed person providing you meet the hours requirements each week.
Are you already claiming carer's allowance?
