this might be a silly question but have you got soil right upto the wall where you have damp issues ? It could be breaching the damp proof course and allowing moisture in.0

Yes the soil goes right up to the bricks, but I've dug a trench against the wall so it goes right down below ground level next to the wall. The damp proof course is above the level of the ground touching the wall.0
