car Insurance - can they do this?

Our car insurance is due to expire at midnight tonight. 3.7.13. However a payment was taken on the 2.7.13 for the first premium, even though I have still paid for these days with the old policy, which was on automatic renewal. The renewal arrived approx 9th June and gives my 14 days cooling off period, though that would still leave a week before the new policy began. The company runs a compare site which will offer the same policy (different Co.) for £100 less . I am not overly chuffed that they have done this, and it states the Policy can be cancelled by email - though they have no email address conveniently on their letter heading... The Company is Tesco car insurance, should I try to haggle the price down on the basis I have paid for 2 days twice or am I stuffed?. Any thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated....

You have 14 days from the policy start date, just cancel and get your money back.

Hang on maybe I misread. Do you have two policies at the moment or are you just complaining the payment was taken a day before the policy started?

Not sure what the problem is here.. You had 3 weeks notificatio that your renewal is due and the price.

You had 3 weeks to shop around and cancel the policy which you didn't. They took the money the day before the policy starts.

You have not paid for 2 days extra. They took the premium in advance.

If i take out a policy with a company now its normal for them to want a deposit.

Haggle the price down should have been done before the policy renewed, But always worth a try.

Same as me with my home insurance, Because i was lazy and thought sorting my holiday out and taking a holiday was more important then a couple of £ saving i didnt bother.

The new policy starts when the old one expires and runs for a full year. Unless its a bonus builder 10 month one.

Thanks for replies. Sorry to say it wasn't a holiday I had (chance would be a fine thing) more like trying to keep my Mum happy over her first Birthday without my Dad........ slightly more important to me than car insurance. But anyway yes I take on board what has been said.
thinking on it, I may cancel and take the fee, it will still be £50 cheaper than tesco.

You might be able to cancel and not be charged a thing as you are in the cooling off period. Just phone them tomorrow instead of messing about with emails.

You should be glad that have auto-renewed you, otherwise you would have no insurance at the moment.

I'm surprised any company is auto-renewing on insurance this year. The laws were changed in April to prevent insurance companies making assumptions on policies and unless they have iron clad t&cs that you specifically agree to, they can't, at a time of claim, revert to you somehow not complying with their terms.
