It's something I've not really noticed before, you learn something new every day:)

I'm gonna have to read the t & c's each time now as generally me, my sis and mum like to go away for some r & r and that would exclude us

I doubt you would fall into the type of category they are trying to avoid, sure if you spoke to them, as a family they would be ok - I'm sure as I posted before, it's more the 'young mates on drunken holiday' type group they are trying to avoid.

I see that a lot in cottages and other holiday places me and my family would like to stay at.
Problem is we are an all female family (well there are guys but they don't like to come away with us)

I think it's a little silly because who says single sex groups are going to be any worse than a mixed sex group out for someone's birthday or other celebration.

I would think they meant all over the age of 18 and the same sex - I seen that written in T&Cs of somewhere else, think it was Butlins or Pontins.

As others have said, they mean hen / stag parties. I'd enter and just explain if I won :)

I emailed them yesterday about this. They apologised, said it was unintentional and have now changed the terms to:

    http://www.tescomagazine.com/competitions/win-a-coastal-break-in-northumberland.html
There is one prize of a three-night weekend or four-night mid-week break self-catering accommodation for up to six people with any combination of family or adult group (but not same sex groups – this applies to hen and stag parties only) staying in Driftwood cottage, Northumberland.
