What to do?

Hi, s
Today my boyfriend was parked up at the Trafford Centre, the car e was parked next to a car with a tight space between the two driver doors. After coming back after a few hours a different car was parked next to us and the space was fine. My partners mirror had been moved and on inspection of the mirror it is slightly pushed out and been scratched along the side.He went back into the centre and was given a form to be filled in to pay £10 and to take his licence in for them to view the CCTV (we were parked right next to a camera) No note was left, not even a sorry? What is the best action to take go to the police? Leave it? He doesn't want to claim on his insurance for something so minor so doesn't want it effecting the price of the insurance as he's 22 its quite high. Thanks for reading.

Unless there is an independent witness, police will not be interested.

For the cost of the repair and the hassle of involving the police and insurers, I would say fix it yourself and forget about it.

If it doesn't t-cut out and the car isn't brand new then just get a used casing off Ebay or a local scrappers. It's not worth your time chasing the person down and involving insurance. It could even have been caused by a big rucksack or suitcase being carried between the cars.

Put it down to the hazards of using a car in a congested car park and move on with life.

    witness,police will not be interested.

An offence has been committed (failing to stop / failing to report an accident) and the police will register it as such if you insist, although there is virtually nothing they can do.

There is a remote possibility that the other driver has reported it to the police as required by law (because there was no-one present at the time) and that by reporting it you will find their details, but it's more likely that all you will achieve is forcing yourself to declare it to every insurer for years and push up your insurance costs. At the moment there is no formal record with any police or insurance body.

Put it down to one of life's experiences.

He should have noted the potential danger and found another space, if he was worried.

totally agree with this. Especially the 4x4s, the bottom of the doors leaves a nasty little dent right in the middle of a standard sized car door.

Disabled badge holders? My partner is one and he doesn't make a habit of crashing into cars. Just because he's disabled doesn't make him automatically a worse driver! Also, I don't always reverse park at the supermarket as I want easy access to the boot to put my shopping away. If I don't reverse park, I tend to keep an eye on the entire car and not just the back end. Maybe I'm the exception that proves the rule... ;)

Life keeps trying to make this more difficult, but I'm chipping away, slowly but surely.

Thank you for the replies. He was more annoyed that the person hadn't left a note he said if they had he would have just binned it anyway for honesty. He was parked well within the parking space lines and was able to get in and out the door without damaging the next car door. Thank you all for the advice, it's not worth pushing his insurace up its just under £2000. He just wondered if he should make the police aware what had happened.

I think the issue may be less to do with the driving and more to do with having to fully open the doors and/or knocking with a wheel chair.

Personally I just avoid parking next to cars with kid seats and 4x4s.
